    Popular cat breedsAbyssinian

Thought to be the breed that the Egyptians kept as pets and rodent killers and came to worship. They are well known as being great family pets as they love human company and get on very well with dogs. They will normally live for 10-15 years and will be generally very healthy cats. They can suffer from progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) which can lead to poor vision and blindness as well as kidney disorders.

    Angora

These semi-long haired cats have a fine coat with no woolly undercoat and can be expected to live for 15 years. They do not suffer from any general ailments. Angora cats are related to Siamese cats and are very intelligent. They can become bored if they are not given company and stimulation.Get a cat insurance quote

    British Shorthair

These are the chunkiest cats you can have as pets. They are very lovable and demand little of their owners. They are very happy with their own company and will rarely roam beyond their own back garden. This makes them ideal pets for working families as they do not demand as much as attention as the kids. They will live for 10-15 years but can be greedy so take care not to overfeed them.

    Burmese

These short-haired cats are well known for their mad moments each day and they will often run around feverishly. Average life span is 15 years but they can easily live for 18-20 years. Burmese cats are very affectionate pets and can be very stocky cats although they do not overeat. They have a lovely sleek coat that can often disguise how big they really are.

    Persian Longhair

Most people will name a Persian cat if they are asked to name a long-haired cat. Persians are typically 'fluffy' but are very gentle and well behaved. Persian cats spend a long time preening and caring for their appearance as well as looking for attention. They can be prone to overeating and as they exercise rarely, it is important to watch their weight and their diet. It is also important to comb their coats daily to prevent knotting and rangling of their coats.

    Siamese

This striking cat is another that can easily live beyond the average 15 years' life span. Similar to the Burmese, they are heavier than their sleek coat suggests. They are also playful and inquisitive. Siamese cats are not an ideal pet if you are working all day as they love attention - they are well known for their vocal demands for affection. Siamese cats are often best kept in pairs to provide company for each other. Siamese cats can also be territorial so they are best kept with their own breed or other oriental breeds as they can be prone to bullying.
